The Caribbean-themed concert, will see the Goombay Dance Band, strongly influenced by the local soca, calypso and western pop music of their Jamaican homeland, perform their back catalogue of hits at the Villa Marina on Saturday 14 June 2008. A visit to St Lucia by band creator Oliver Bendt proved inspiring. “It was the wonderful feeling of freedom that the music and sunshine created,’ he explained, ‘something I felt I could share with the world”. Thus, the Goombay Dance Band was named after the Caribbean Goombay, a small bay near St. Lucia. The band uniquely mixes a splash of Reggae with much of the unrestrained Caribbean joy of life, delivering a musical mixture from sun, temper, fantasy and fire. The hits followed quickly, including “Sun of Jamaica”, which topped the German charts for 9 weeks selling 11million worldwide copies to date. Others are “Eldorado”, “Aloha oe, until we meet again”, “Caribbean Girl”, “Island of Dreams”, “and Paradise of Joy “,” Rain, “Marrakesh” and Christmas at Sea”. An international hit, “Seven Tears” conquered the British charts in 1982, and held the No.1 position for 3 consecutive weeks, becoming one of the highest selling records of the year. In addition the band attained numerous honours: their recordings have become three times platinum and twelve times gold after a quarter century of music history! Says promoter John Wannenburgh of Skunkworks, “When it comes to the Eighties, we all remember the dressing up, the larger than life acts and the groups that made “Top Of The Pops” such a colourful spectacle. It’s fair to say that the Goombay Dance Band deserves a share of those memories”. He continued “I am delighted that the Goombay Dance Band will make their first ever visit to our island and kick off the summer for us, enabling the Manx public to experience and enjoy one of the most memorable bands of its time, and that brought such a smile to the 80s music scene”. The GDB are due commence a German tour in March 2008. Tickets are been sold via the Villa Marina Box Office (Tel: 694555), and the Tourist Information Centre, Sea Terminal.
